I write dark, speculative fiction – sometimes with a paranormal edge. Influences include Philip K. Dick, J.G. Ballard, Iain Banks, and Margaret Atwood. I have a novel coming out in 2016/17, and a collection of short stories due before that. I am variously fuelled by caffeine, whisky, and sometimes caffeine and whisky at the same time. I like writing to weird electronic music, and my ambition is to live in the Portuguese countryside with a couple of goats and a cat named ‘Barry’ (or maybe ‘Barrihno’).
Aside from the writing, I’m also a practising psychotherapist specialising in hypnosis and other techniques. It has been a genuine honour to help people overcome their challenges in life. And of course, ten years spent discussing people’s personal problems has taught me a great deal about what makes people tick. That too has been a privilege.
Prior to creating fiction, I wrote a couple of non-fiction books. I think they’re pretty decent.
There is a great deal of crossover between therapy and creative writing. Both require a certain amount of insight into the human condition – and both require you to be reasonably unhinged*.
